Inland Waterway Charts and Guides – Éditions du Breil

The inland waterway charts and guides published by Éditions du Breil are designed for navigation on the rivers, canals and navigable waterways of France and selected European waterways, particularly in southern Belgium. Their main strength is the combination of navigation-oriented cartography with practical information that helps boaters prepare an actual inland waterway itinerary.

Unlike a nautical chart intended for coastal or offshore navigation, an inland waterway chart must address a different set of constraints: locks, bridges, draught, air draught, waterway dimensions, structures, mooring places, ports, local regulations and stopping opportunities. Éditions du Breil has developed a specialised collection that brings this information together within the geographical context of the route.

The guides are primarily intended for recreational boaters and navigators exploring the French inland waterway network. They are also useful for planning an itinerary, organising the stages of a river or canal cruise, and discovering the historical and cultural heritage along the waterways.

What are Éditions du Breil inland waterway charts and guides used for?

An Éditions du Breil inland waterways guide is more than a geographical map. It is a practical navigation and trip-planning document.

It can be used to:

• understand the layout of an inland waterway;

• plan a river or canal itinerary;

• identify locks and major structures;

• consider the dimensions and characteristics of waterways;

• anticipate draught and air draught constraints;

• identify possible stopping places;

• organise the different stages of a cruise;

• discover towns, villages and points of interest;

• understand the structure of a canal or river network.

The combination of cartographic, navigational and tourist information is one of the defining features of the collection.

A collection organised by regions and waterways

Éditions du Breil publishes guides covering a wide range of major French inland navigation areas.

The collection includes guides dedicated to areas such as:

• Brittany;

• the Loire and Central France;

• Burgundy and Franche-Comté;

• Alsace and Lorraine;

• the Lot;

• the Charente;

• the Canal du Midi;

• the Sambre;

• the Rhône–Rhine Canal;

• the Pays de la Loire;

• Burgundy and the Nivernais;

• Aquitaine;

• the Sèvre Niortaise;

• Nord-Pas-de-Calais;

• the Gironde Estuary;

• the Meuse;

• the Rhône;

• the Marne;

• Picardy;

• the Seine;

• the Rhine.

This regional organisation makes it possible to select documentation specifically adapted to the waterways being navigated rather than relying only on a general map.

Information specifically adapted to inland navigation

Inland navigation requires a different approach from maritime navigation.

On a canal or managed river, the navigator must consider the dimensions of the boat in relation to the characteristics of the waterway. Draught can restrict access to certain sections, while air draught becomes critical when passing beneath bridges and other structures.

Locks are another fundamental feature of many French inland waterways. Knowing their location and sequence helps the navigator organise the stages of a journey.

Éditions du Breil charts and guides therefore help users understand the route while taking into account the specific constraints of inland navigation.

Cartography designed for river and canal cruising

Cartography is at the heart of the guides. It provides a clear representation of the waterways and helps the navigator understand the structure of the route.

The general map of the French inland waterways provides a broader view of the network and helps identify major routes and the characteristics of different waterways.

For cruise planning, these publications can therefore be used at two complementary levels:

• a general map to establish the overall itinerary;

• a regional guide to study the individual stages in greater detail.

This approach is particularly useful for longer cruises crossing several regions.

Discovering France's inland waterway heritage

Inland navigation is not only about technical constraints. Canals and rivers cross regions with considerable historical, architectural, natural and cultural heritage.

Éditions du Breil guides include information that helps navigators discover the areas along their route. This allows an itinerary to be planned around both navigational requirements and opportunities for sightseeing.

Depending on the guide, information may include:

• historical sites;

• towns and villages;

• museums;

• restaurants;

• markets;

• local events;

• places of interest accessible from the waterway.

The guide therefore serves both as a navigation document and as a companion for discovering the territory.

Multilingual inland waterways guides

Éditions du Breil guides are multilingual. The texts are presented in French, English and German, making the same publication accessible to crews from different countries.

This is particularly useful for European inland navigation, where crews may be international and where itineraries can cross different regions and national networks.

For an English-speaking or German-speaking boater planning a French canal cruise, multilingual information makes consultation on board considerably easier.

Regularly renewed navigation guides

Inland waterway information can change. Infrastructure, works, regulations and certain characteristics of waterways may evolve over time.

Éditions du Breil guides are renewed on average every two years. For heavily used waterways, updates may be more frequent.

It is therefore sensible to check the edition of a guide before an important voyage, particularly for a long cruise or an unfamiliar route.

The concept of current documentation is just as relevant to inland navigation as to maritime navigation. SHOM, Admiralty and other hydrographic organisations primarily address maritime navigation, whereas specialist publications such as Éditions du Breil are designed specifically for inland waterways.

Examples of use

A boater planning a cruise on the Canal du Midi can use the relevant guide to study the route, structures and possible stopping places.

A navigator planning a cruise through Burgundy and the Nivernais can select the appropriate regional guide to prepare the different stages.

For navigation on the Seine, Rhône, Rhine or Meuse, the corresponding guides provide documentation specific to the waterways concerned.

For a longer cruise crossing several regions, a general map of the French inland waterways can first be used to establish the itinerary, followed by several regional guides for detailed preparation.

Who are these guides for?

Éditions du Breil guides are suitable for both beginners and experienced inland waterway navigators.

For beginners, the guide helps explain how an inland waterway is organised and provides a structured way of preparing the route.

For boat owners, it provides practical documentation for regular cruising and for discovering new waterways.

For navigators planning several weeks of cruising, several guides can be combined to create a coherent itinerary and anticipate the main constraints of each section.

For international crews, the multilingual format is another useful feature for consultation on board.

General map, regional guide and additional documentation

A complete inland navigation project may require several levels of documentation.

A general map provides an overall view of the network. A regional guide then provides the detailed information needed for each stage. Depending on the type of navigation, additional documents may also be useful, including regulatory publications, inland navigation training material and publications specific to particular waterways.

Éditions du Breil therefore occupies a distinctive position within inland waterway documentation by combining cartography, practical navigation information and descriptions of the territories along the route.

Why use specialist inland waterway documentation?

A general-purpose map cannot always provide the level of detail required for canal and river navigation.

Inland navigation requires information at the scale of the waterway and its infrastructure: locks, bridges, waterway dimensions, draught, air draught, stopping places and ports.

Specialist documentation brings cartographic representation closer to the practical needs of the navigator.

This is the main value of Éditions du Breil charts and guides: they provide documentation specifically designed for inland navigation and for the practical preparation of river and canal itineraries.

Conclusion

Éditions du Breil inland waterway charts and guides are specialised navigation documents for preparing and supporting navigation on rivers, canals and other inland waterways.

Their value lies in the combination of several types of information: waterway cartography, infrastructure, route characteristics, stopping opportunities and tourist and cultural information.

The collection covers many French regions and waterways, including Brittany, the Loire, Burgundy, the Canal du Midi, Aquitaine, the Rhône, the Seine, the Meuse and the Rhine.

For a river or canal cruise, an effective approach is to combine a general overview of the network with specialist regional guides covering the individual stages of the route. Using a recent edition is also an important precaution because inland waterways and their infrastructure can evolve.
