Shom L nautical chart English Channel

The Shom (Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy) is the official French body responsible for marine charting and the dissemination of nautical information. For recreational boating, it offers several types of nautical charts tailored to the needs of navigators.

Types of Shom charts available for recreational boaters and the merchant navy:

- Rolled charts: These are Shom C charts, paper charts generally in A0 format, ideal for detailed reading on a chart table on board.
- Folded charts: These are Shom L charts, paper charts generally in A0 format, more manageable and suited to small vessels; they are folded for easy storage.
- Sedimentological charts: These are Shom G charts, paper charts generally in A0 format, showing the nature of the seabed. They are folded like the Shom L charts.
- Exercise area charts: These are Shom Z charts, also called Zonex variants. Paper charts generally in A0 format, they include an overlay showing the boundaries of exercise and firing zones used by maritime forces; Notices to Mariners must be consulted for more information. They are rolled like the Shom C charts.
- Geotiff raster charts: Digital charts compatible with certain navigation software. They are generated from official paper nautical charts and faithfully reproduce their content, symbology, and layout.
