Pleasure Boat Licence DVD: Practising Offshore Navigation with the Vagnon CD-ROM

Preparing for the French offshore boating licence extension requires an understanding of navigation principles and the ability to apply them to practical exercises. Candidates need to learn how to read a nautical chart, plot a course, calculate a heading and distance, and take current and drift into account. Theory is essential, but repeated practice helps learners assimilate calculation methods and check that they can apply them correctly.

Nautic Way’s Pleasure Boat Licence DVD category currently offers the Vagnon practical training CD-ROM for the offshore boating licence extension. This digital resource focuses on chart-based navigation exercises and complements course manuals and other examination preparation materials. It is intended for candidates who want to practise nautical calculations, understand the stages of a navigation problem and improve at their own pace.

Although the category name refers to pleasure boat licence DVDs, the product currently listed is a practical training CD-ROM for offshore navigation. Its main purpose is to provide navigation exercises and simulations rather than a general video course covering every type of boating licence.

The Vagnon practical training CD-ROM for offshore navigation

The Vagnon practical training CD-ROM is intended for candidates preparing for the French offshore boating licence extension. It provides a way to practise chartwork methods and the calculations required to solve navigation exercises.

Offshore navigation brings together several related concepts. The navigator must interpret information on a nautical chart, determine a course, calculate a heading and estimate the duration of a passage from speed and distance. They must also understand how navigation conditions, particularly current and drift, can affect the vessel’s actual track.

The CD-ROM provides a practical working environment for practising these concepts. It complements a course manual and written exercises by allowing users to work with navigation parameters and compare their results with the available corrections.

This type of resource can be particularly useful for candidates who want to repeat exercises without having to review all the theory each time. It allows them to concentrate on the stages they find most difficult and progress methodically.

Working with a Shom nautical chart

The nautical chart is central to offshore licence preparation. It presents information needed to understand a maritime area and plan a route. To solve a chartwork exercise, candidates must identify the starting position and destination, plot the intended course, measure distance and interpret chart information correctly.

The Vagnon CD-ROM supports practice with chartwork exercises associated with the Shom chart used for offshore licence preparation. Working with a chart helps connect theoretical calculations with their graphical representation.

A structured exercise may involve several steps:

• identifying the starting position and destination;

• plotting the intended course on the chart;

• measuring the distance to be travelled;

• determining the heading required by the exercise;

• taking current or drift information into account;

• checking whether the final result is consistent.

This step-by-step method helps learners understand why each operation is necessary. An error in measurement, chart interpretation or calculation can affect the subsequent results. Regular practice helps identify which stages require the most careful checking.

Calculating headings, courses and bearings

Navigation calculations are important skills developed during preparation for the offshore boating licence extension. They help determine the direction to steer, represent the intended movement and understand the vessel’s position in relation to reference points.

A heading is the direction in which the vessel is pointing. A course represents the direction of the vessel’s intended or actual track over the ground. These concepts are related, but they are not always identical: wind and current can alter the vessel’s movement relative to its initial heading.

A bearing indicates the direction of an observed point from the vessel. Bearings are used in different navigation calculations and can contribute to position fixing, depending on the method employed.

To improve, candidates should do more than memorise formulas. They need to understand the initial data, identify what the exercise requires, apply the appropriate method and check whether the answer makes sense in relation to the chart.

The CD-ROM provides a way to repeat these calculations and better understand the sequence of operations. It can be useful for exercises in which several calculations must be performed in succession.

Understanding the effects of current and drift

At sea, the direction in which a vessel points does not necessarily match its actual track over the ground. Current moves the water in which the vessel is travelling, while wind can cause drift. These effects must be considered when estimating the vessel’s track and determining the corrections required.

An offshore navigation exercise may ask the candidate to use the speed and direction of the current to determine the resulting track. The process involves interpreting the supplied data, applying the appropriate calculation method and checking whether the resulting trajectory is consistent.

The Vagnon CD-ROM provides a way to practise these concepts through exercises and simulations. Candidates can develop a better understanding of the relationships between heading, course, speed and environmental effects.

These exercises are also useful for recreational sailors who want to strengthen their navigation knowledge beyond examination preparation. Understanding current and drift is important when planning a passage and interpreting differences between an intended course and the vessel’s actual track.

A revision method to complement a course manual

A digital training tool does not replace theoretical study. It is most useful when combined with a course manual and written exercises.

A manual explains the concepts, calculation methods and underlying principles. A test book allows candidates to practise questions and exercises in a format suited to examination preparation. The CD-ROM adds a practical dimension by providing an interactive environment for chart-based navigation exercises.

A structured revision plan can follow these steps:

1. Study the concept. Read the explanation of the calculation or navigation method being covered.

2. Solve an exercise on paper. Identify the data, apply the method and record the reasoning.

3. Practise with the CD-ROM. Work through practical exercises and review the results.

4. Analyse mistakes. Determine whether the difficulty arose from chart reading, a conversion, a formula or the order of operations.

5. Repeat the exercise. Try again without immediately consulting the solution to check that the method has been understood.

This approach develops both understanding and accuracy. It also helps identify topics that need more practice before the examination.

Who can benefit from this digital training resource?

The Vagnon CD-ROM is primarily intended for people preparing for the French offshore boating licence extension who want to practise chart-based navigation exercises. It may suit candidates who have already begun studying the theory and want to strengthen their practical skills.

It can be useful for:

• revising heading and course calculations;

• practising distance measurement on nautical charts;

• understanding the effects of current and drift;

• repeating offshore navigation exercises;

• complementing a course manual and a test book;

• identifying the stages of a calculation that remain difficult.

Recreational sailors returning to their studies after a break may also benefit from repeating exercises to refresh their knowledge. The digital resource provides a structured way to put previously learned methods back into practice.

Check computer compatibility before use

As with any software supplied on physical media, it is important to check compatibility with the computer before starting. Operating systems and computer environments change over time, and actual compatibility may depend on the configuration, required software and available disc-reading equipment.

Users should therefore check the technical information applicable to the product and ensure that their computer can read the disc and run the program. It should not be assumed that an older CD-ROM will work directly on every modern computer.

Checking these requirements in advance helps ensure that training sessions can begin under suitable conditions and avoids unexpected technical problems during revision.

Conclusion

Nautic Way’s Pleasure Boat Licence DVD category currently offers the Vagnon practical training CD-ROM for the French offshore boating licence extension. This digital resource focuses on navigation exercises using a Shom nautical chart and supports practice with headings, courses and bearings, as well as the effects of current and drift.

Used alongside a course manual and a test book, it helps candidates repeat exercises, check their results and better understand offshore navigation methods. It is intended for learners who want to strengthen their practical skills and organise their preparation for the examination.
