Mercator projection chart
The Mercator chart is a nautical chart used in maritime navigation because it makes it easy to plot a constant-bearing route: on this projection, paths followed with the same heading (rhumb lines) appear as straight lines, which simplifies the navigator’s work when determining and following a course using a compass and ruler, while faithfully preserving angles and directions, so that headings measured on the chart can be used directly at sea, despite a distortion of distances that increases toward high latitudes.
