Portable Marine VHF Radios: Waterproof Handheld Radios with GPS and DSC

Mobile communication for safer boating

A portable marine VHF radio is an important communication device for boaters who need to stay in contact with other vessels, ports and coast stations while moving freely around the boat. Compact, battery-powered and designed for handheld use, it is suitable for sailing yachts, motorboats, tenders and many water-based activities. Depending on the vessel and applicable regulations, it can be used as the main radio on some small craft or as a valuable complement to a fixed VHF radio.

The Portable VHF category at Librairie Maritime Nautic Way includes radios from Navicom, Simrad and Standard Horizon. Features vary between models and may include selectable transmission power, rechargeable batteries, water resistance, flotation, integrated GPS, DSC or hands-free communication options. The range also includes accessories for maintaining compatible equipment, such as replacement batteries, antennas, chargers and belt clips.

When choosing a handheld marine VHF radio, consider the conditions in which it will be used, the type of boat, the duration of trips, the required radio coverage and the safety functions needed. A straightforward model may be sufficient for routine communications, while a radio with GPS and DSC provides additional options for digital calls and position reporting.

What is a portable VHF radio used for?

A portable VHF radio enables voice communication on designated maritime radio channels. It can be used to contact a harbour office, communicate with another vessel, coordinate a manoeuvre or transmit an emergency message in accordance with applicable procedures.

Its portability is especially useful when the skipper leaves the helm temporarily, when a crew member is working on deck or when a tender is used to travel between the boat and shore. A suitable handheld radio can also accompany certain water-based activities where portable communication equipment is required.

Typical uses include:

• communication between vessels and with coast stations;

• contacting ports and harbour authorities;

• communication between the cockpit, deck and crew members;

• communication from a tender where conditions and regulations permit;

• distress or urgency calls, depending on the radio's features and the applicable procedures.

A portable VHF radio cannot guarantee communication at every distance. Range depends on transmission power, antenna height, obstacles, coastal terrain and propagation conditions. A handheld radio used close to the water will generally have a different range from a fixed VHF connected to an antenna mounted high above the deck.

Transmission power: 1 W, 5 W or 6 W

Transmission power is an important comparison criterion. Depending on the model, portable VHF radios may offer several power settings, such as 1 W, 2 W, 2.5 W, 5 W or 6 W.

Lower power may be sufficient for short-range communication and generally reduces battery consumption. Higher power can improve a radio link when reception conditions are favourable, but it does not guarantee a particular range. Antenna performance, the user's position and surrounding obstacles remain important factors.

When a radio offers multiple power settings, use the setting appropriate to the situation and follow the manufacturer's instructions and channel regulations. Maximum power is not necessarily required for every communication.

The Navicom RT411 5W and RT420+ 5W are examples of handheld radios designed for routine marine communications. Other models in the Standard Horizon range offer selectable transmission power. Check the individual product specifications for exact details.

Water resistance and flotation: two different features

Portable VHF radios are used in environments where moisture, sea spray and accidental drops into the water are real risks. Water resistance and flotation are therefore important, but they are not the same feature.

Where specified, an ingress protection rating indicates the conditions of water exposure covered by the relevant standard. Any stated depth and duration limits must be observed. A waterproof radio is not necessarily buoyant: it may withstand water exposure yet sink if dropped overboard.

Conversely, a floating radio is designed to remain on the surface under the conditions stated by the manufacturer, but that does not mean it can withstand every type of immersion. Some radios require an additional flotation accessory.

Before choosing a waterproof handheld VHF, check:

• its water-protection rating and the conditions it covers;

• whether it floats by itself or needs an accessory;

• whether it has a light to help locate it in low visibility;

• the durability of the casing and controls in a marine environment;

• the manufacturer's rinsing, drying and maintenance instructions.

These considerations are especially important for single-handed sailing, tender transfers, fishing, kayaking and activities where a radio may be dropped into the water.

Integrated GPS and DSC: useful safety functions

Some portable VHF radios include an integrated GPS receiver. This determines the radio's geographical position and, depending on the model, displays coordinates or provides waypoint navigation functions.

DSC, or Digital Selective Calling, allows certain calls to be transmitted digitally. On a compatible radio, a distress alert can transmit the station's identity and, when a valid GPS position is available and correctly configured, the corresponding coordinates.

GPS and DSC therefore provide additional capabilities compared with a radio limited to voice communications. They do not remove the need to know distress procedures or communicate clearly with rescue services.

The Standard Horizon HX890E combines selectable transmission power with integrated GPS and DSC functions. Certain Navicom models, such as the RT420DSC+, also combine VHF communication with GPS and digital functions, depending on their configuration.

Check the exact features of each radio. An integrated GPS receiver does not automatically mean that DSC is available. A radio equipped with DSC must also be correctly programmed with the appropriate MMSI where required. Allocation procedures and operating rules depend on the applicable regulations.

Battery life, replacement batteries and charging

The battery determines how long a portable VHF radio can operate. Actual battery life depends on capacity, transmission frequency, selected power, listening time, temperature and battery condition.

A radio used mainly for reception generally consumes less energy than one that transmits frequently. For longer outings or cruising, check the manufacturer's stated battery life under conditions comparable to your intended use.

The category includes accessories that can help maintain compatible equipment, including replacement batteries, mains chargers, car-socket chargers, power cables and charging cradles. Select accessories specifically compatible with the radio model, as connectors, voltage requirements and charging systems can vary.

Good practices for maintaining battery life include:

• charging the radio before departure;

• checking the battery level before every outing;

• carrying a compatible spare battery where appropriate;

• using a suitable transmission power setting;

• avoiding storage at extreme temperatures;

• checking the condition of charging contacts and chargers.

A portable VHF should remain accessible and sufficiently charged for use when needed. It should not be stored in a difficult-to-reach bag while the boat is underway.

Antennas, accessories and maintenance

The antenna is an important part of the radio system. A damaged or poorly fitted antenna can affect transmission and reception. Some models have replaceable antennas; the range includes a replacement antenna compatible with several Navicom RT radios.

Carrying accessories also improve convenience. A belt clip or lanyard keeps the radio within reach and helps reduce the risk of dropping it. Hands-free kits or earpiece microphones can be useful when supported by the model and when the user needs to keep both hands free.

After use at sea, follow the manufacturer's instructions for rinsing and drying the radio, especially after exposure to salt water. Check the antenna, casing, buttons, charging connector and seals. Do not open a waterproof radio casing unless following the manufacturer's specified maintenance procedure.

Choosing a portable VHF radio for your boating plans

For coastal sailing

A straightforward portable VHF may be suitable for contacting ports and nearby vessels. Look for intuitive controls, a readable display, sufficient battery life for the intended trips and a water-protection rating suited to the expected exposure.

For offshore sailing and cruising

A handheld VHF can complement a fixed radio. A model with GPS, DSC and flotation may provide additional useful functions in an emergency. Battery life, charging options and easy access should be planned for longer passages.

For tenders and water sports

Portability, durability, simple controls and water protection are important. If the radio may be dropped into the water, check explicitly whether it floats by itself or requires a flotation accessory.

For replacing or maintaining existing equipment

A replacement battery, charger, antenna or belt clip may be needed. Always check compatibility with the exact radio model and the electrical specifications provided by the manufacturer.

Regulatory requirements and good radio practice

Marine VHF operation is subject to specific rules. In France, operating a ship's radio station may require a station licence. DSC functions require an assigned and correctly programmed MMSI. Operator qualification requirements vary according to the equipment, circumstances and navigation area. Check the applicable rules before departure.

Crew members should know the appropriate maritime channels, calling procedures and priority rules for distress communications. Calls should be concise, identifiable and consistent with radio procedures. A handheld VHF does not replace visual and audible lookout or other required safety equipment.

Conclusion

A portable marine VHF radio combines communication and mobility with additional safety functions on selected models. A water-resistant handheld radio suited to its operating conditions allows crew members to communicate from the cockpit, deck or tender. Integrated GPS and DSC can support position reporting and distress alerts, while compatible batteries, antennas and chargers help keep the equipment operational.

To choose the right model, compare transmission power, battery life, water resistance, flotation, digital functions and compatible accessories. A radio that is properly maintained, fully charged and familiar to its user is an important complement to a boat's safety equipment.
