Games for Playing on Board: Sailing, Quizzes and Discovery

Introduction: Enjoyable Activities Inspired by the Nautical World

During a cruise, a stopover or a family holiday, games provide an opportunity to share relaxing moments and explore the world of boating together. The Games for Playing on Board category at Nautic Way Maritime Bookstore brings together activities related to nautical culture, sailing races, coastal boating knowledge, drawing and geographical discovery. These different formats suit a range of interests and offer ways to spend leisure time at home, in harbour or aboard a boat when conditions make playing safe and practical.

The selection includes a card game inspired by nautical racing, quiz cards for testing knowledge needed for the coastal boating licence, a computer sailing simulator, a pirate-themed drawing activity and two inflatable globes featuring search-and-find challenges and questions about the world.

Each activity has a different purpose. Some focus on strategy and competition, while others encourage revision, creativity or the discovery of geography and wildlife. They can appeal to recreational sailors, people preparing for a boating licence, children and families looking for activities that combine entertainment with learning.

Card Games and Nautical Racing

Card games inspired by sailing offer an accessible way to explore the world of regattas and offshore races. The basic idea is to advance through a race by playing cards and responding to events that can change its course. Sailing conditions, equipment problems and unexpected situations add a tactical element to the game.

This format brings several players together around a shared objective or a friendly competition. It may appeal to sailing enthusiasts as well as people who are just beginning to discover nautical vocabulary and the situations associated with life at sea. The rules establish the structure of the game, while the cards introduce events that require players to adapt their strategy.

On board, a card game has a practical advantage: it takes up little space and can be played on a sufficiently stable table, protected from spray and wind. It is particularly suitable for time spent in harbour, at anchor or ashore. While a boat is under way, games should only be played when they do not interfere with lookout duties or the crew’s responsibilities.

These games can also lead to conversations about ocean races, managing unexpected events and the decisions made by a skipper. They remain recreational activities, however, and do not reproduce the full complexity of a real regatta.

Nautical Quizzes for Coastal Boating Licence Revision

Quiz cards for the coastal boating licence provide an interactive way to test knowledge rather than relying on reading alone. Their subjects include important areas of recreational boating, such as buoyage, vessel lights and shapes, safety at sea, steering and sailing rules, weather, sound signals and maritime communications.

The question-and-answer format makes short revision sessions easy to organise. Someone preparing for a boating licence can draw a card, answer the question and then check what they have learned. In a group, players can take turns asking questions and explaining their answers. This approach helps identify familiar topics and areas that require further study.

Quiz cards can be used to:

• review maritime buoyage and the identification of marks;

• revisit right-of-way rules and appropriate conduct between vessels;

• memorise safety principles and maritime signals;

• test knowledge of weather and sailing conditions;

• revise the basics of VHF radio communication;

• review chart-reading concepts covered during preparation.

This type of game can be used individually, with family members or with other prospective boaters. It is particularly suitable for short revision sessions at home or while travelling. However, quiz cards do not replace a complete training course or up-to-date educational resources for the examination. Navigation rules and safety knowledge must be learned and checked in their proper regulatory context.

Sailing Simulation and Virtual Regattas

The category also includes a computer sailing simulation. Unlike card games and activities that do not require a screen, this format recreates the world of regattas in a digital environment. Players control a virtual boat, choose their course and attempt to reach the finish line under favourable conditions.

A sailing simulator focuses on anticipation, manoeuvring decisions and an understanding of how wind affects a boat’s progress. Depending on the available features, it can offer different types of sailing boats, various sailing venues, changing weather conditions and race courses. Single-player and multiplayer modes provide different experiences, from individual practice to timed challenges and competition between players.

This type of activity may appeal to sailing enthusiasts who want to continue their interest ashore, as well as beginners curious about the general principles of racing. It allows players to experiment with course choices in a virtual environment and consider how tactical decisions can influence the result.

A simulation must nevertheless be distinguished from real sailing. A boat’s behaviour depends on many factors that a game cannot reproduce in full. Skills acquired in a virtual environment do not replace practical training, manoeuvring practice or on-board safety procedures. It is also important to check that the software is compatible with the computer and operating system being used.

Creative Activities with a Pirate Theme

Drawing offers another way to spend time on board or during a holiday. The pirate-themed drawing activity encourages children to develop their creativity through an imaginary maritime setting. It complements quizzes and strategy games with a quieter activity centred on drawing and imagination.

Drawing characters, accessories or scenes inspired by pirates can encourage observation, coordination and confidence in one’s own creations. Children can follow the suggested steps and then personalise their drawings by adding details or inventing a scene. This activity can be suitable for relaxing in harbour, using a table in the boat’s living area or occupying time during a journey, provided a stable surface is available.

The pirate theme also connects with the imaginative world of sea voyages, historic sailing ships and distant islands. It can lead to conversations about sailing vessels and maritime history while leaving plenty of room for fiction.

When choosing a drawing activity, it is useful to consider the child’s age, interest in drawing and ability to follow illustrated instructions. A pencil and a few sheets of paper may be sufficient, depending on the materials required. On board, supplies should be put away after use to prevent them from falling or becoming scattered.

Inflatable Globes: Geography, Travel and Wildlife

Two games in this category use an inflatable globe as the basis for an activity. Both combine world discovery, visual search and quizzes, but their subjects differ: one focuses on countries and destinations, while the other introduces animals found in different parts of the world.

The travel-themed globe uses missions and questions to encourage players to locate places and explore the continents. It can help introduce the location of countries, exercise geographical memory and prompt conversations about destinations people would like to visit. For a family planning a cruise or a holiday, it offers a relaxed way to explore geography together.

The second globe focuses on wildlife around the world. Players search for animals, answer questions and develop their knowledge of species and their geographical distribution. The activity combines observation, speed and learning, giving children an opportunity to discover the diversity of animal life.

An inflatable globe is easier to store and transport than a rigid globe of a similar size. These games can therefore be used at home, on holiday or aboard a boat when there is enough room. Before playing on board, it is advisable to choose a clear surface and take the movement of the vessel into account.

These globes are suitable for activities shared by children and adults. They introduce geography and nature through play and do not require prior knowledge. The number of participants and the rules depend on the specific version, so it is useful to check the instructions supplied with the chosen game.

How to Choose a Game for Playing on Board

The right choice depends on the players’ ages, available space, the time available and the kind of activity they prefer. Nautic Way’s selection offers several different uses.

• For a table game: a nautical racing card game brings several participants together for a competitive round.

• For learning through revision: coastal boating licence quiz cards help test nautical knowledge.

• For computer sailing enthusiasts: a simulator recreates regatta situations in a virtual environment.

• For a creative activity: pirate-themed drawing provides a quieter, imaginative pastime.

• For discovering the world: inflatable globes combine geographical identification, questions and visual searches.

• For family activities: quizzes and globe games encourage interaction between generations, according to each game’s rules.

The setting is also important. On board, choose activities that fit the available space and conditions. Card games require a suitable surface, creative activities need a small amount of equipment, and the sailing simulator requires a compatible computer. Inflatable globes are easy to store but need enough room to be handled comfortably.

Conclusion: Learn, Play and Share Time Around the Boat

Games for playing on board offer several ways to enjoy activities connected with sailing and discovery. Nautical racing cards introduce strategy and the unexpected events of a regatta; quiz cards help revise knowledge for the coastal boating licence; the sailing simulator offers a digital experience; pirate-themed drawing encourages creativity; and inflatable globes invite players to explore countries and wildlife.

This variety makes it possible to choose an activity according to age, interests and circumstances. On board, in harbour, during a stopover or at home, these games can enrich leisure time and stimulate curiosity about the sea and the wider world. They complement books and educational materials but do not replace training, regulatory documents or the safety procedures required for navigation.
