French Inland-Waters Boating Licence: Study Code, Practice Tests and Examination Kit

Preparing for the French inland-waters boating licence

The French recreational boating licence, inland-waters option, allows holders to operate certain recreational motorboats on inland waterways under the conditions set by French regulations. Preparation requires knowledge of navigation rules on rivers, canals and lakes, as well as signals, buoyage, safety procedures and the specific features of inland navigation.

Nautic Way’s Inland Waterways Boating Licence category includes four complementary Codes Rousseau study resources: the Inland Waters Boating Licence Code, the Inland Waters Boating Licence Test Book, the Inland Waters Examination Kit and the Inland Waters Boating Licence Pack, which combines the code and test book.

Each resource serves a different purpose. The study code explains the rules, the test book helps candidates check their knowledge, the examination kit brings together several learning materials, and the pack combines theory with practice. Used together, these resources help candidates organise their revision and identify the subjects that require further study.

The Codes Rousseau study code for inland navigation rules

The Codes Rousseau Inland Waters Boating Licence Code is the main study resource for learning the theoretical knowledge required for the examination. It covers essential concepts for navigating inland waterways and explains the rules that apply in this environment.

Inland navigation has its own characteristics. Unlike navigation at sea, it may involve locks, narrow waterways, passing situations, specific traffic rules and interactions with different users of the waterway. Candidates therefore need to recognise signals and understand the instructions that apply in different situations.

The topics covered include:

• general knowledge and nautical terminology;

• buoyage and inland-waterway signs;

• traffic and passing rules;

• steering and navigation rules;

• sound and visual signals;

• vessel lights and shapes;

• onboard safety and risk prevention;

• mooring and manoeuvring in designated areas;

• lock procedures;

• environmental protection;

• principles relating to VHF radio use and communication, where covered by the syllabus.

The aim is not simply to memorise rules, but to understand how to apply them. For example, interpreting a sign on a canal helps a boater anticipate a traffic situation. Knowing the rules for passing helps prepare an appropriate manoeuvre. Understanding lock procedures makes it easier to anticipate the stages of passage and follow the relevant instructions.

Working through the study code progressively helps establish a solid foundation before moving on to practice questions.

The Codes Rousseau test book for examination practice

The Codes Rousseau Inland Waters Boating Licence Test Book complements the study manual. It helps candidates check their understanding of the syllabus and practise answering theory questions.

Questions are organised to cover different subjects and help identify areas that have not yet been fully mastered. Mock examinations then bring several topics together in a single session and provide practice under conditions similar to those of a theory assessment.

The test book can be used in several ways:

• after studying a chapter, to check understanding immediately;

• during revision, to identify topics that need more work;

• before the examination, to assess overall preparation;

• after a mistake, to review the relevant rule and understand the reasoning behind the correct answer.

A good method is to look beyond the number of correct answers. When an answer is wrong, candidates should return to the relevant concept and understand why another answer is correct. This is particularly important for traffic rules, signals and safety procedures, which must be interpreted in different situations.

Mock examinations are also useful for assessing consistency. If a particular subject remains difficult across several test sessions, candidates can return to the corresponding section of the study code before continuing.

The Inland Waters Examination Kit

The Codes Rousseau Inland Waters Examination Kit brings together several resources designed to support preparation for the French inland-waters boating licence. Depending on the kit configuration, it combines the study code, a test resource with corrected questions, a candidate booklet and various revision and storage accessories.

The benefit of this type of set is that it gathers the main learning materials into one preparation package. The code explains the subject, the questions help check understanding, and the candidate booklet supports the organisation of the training process. Accessories can make it easier to take notes and keep documents together.

The kit may suit candidates who prefer a coordinated set of resources for their revision. It is nevertheless important to check the exact contents of the version being considered, particularly any additional items included in the case.

For effective use, candidates can begin by studying the code and then gradually move on to practice questions. Mistakes made during testing can be recorded in the candidate booklet or a revision notebook, making it easier to track progress and revisit topics that need improvement.

The Inland Waters Boating Licence Pack: code and test book

The Codes Rousseau Inland Waters Boating Licence Pack combines the study code and test book. It provides both a resource for learning the syllabus and a resource for checking the knowledge acquired.

This combination supports a two-stage learning process: understand the rules, then apply them to questions. It keeps theory and practice together and makes it easier to plan revision sessions.

For example, a session might begin with a review of traffic rules on inland waterways. The candidate can then answer a set of questions on that topic, check the answers and revisit the explanations where a mistake occurs. In a later session, questions from different subjects can be mixed together to check whether the candidate can identify the relevant rule without knowing the topic in advance.

The pack can therefore form the basis of an independent revision programme while also complementing formal training. The choice between the study code, test book, examination kit or combined pack depends on the candidate’s current level of preparation and the resources already available.

Understanding the specific features of inland navigation

Preparation for the inland-waters licence should develop an understanding of the characteristics of inland waterways. Rivers, canals and lakes do not all present the same navigation conditions. Waterway dimensions, structures, other boat traffic and signs require careful observation and compliance with the applicable rules.

Passing through a lock is a practical example of a situation candidates need to understand. Boaters must recognise signals, follow access instructions and respect the safety procedures associated with the structure. They also need to anticipate manoeuvres and take account of other vessels present.

Signs and buoyage are equally important. They help identify channel limits, potential hazards and the rules to follow. Effective preparation therefore involves associating each signal with its meaning and considering what action it requires.

Onboard safety is another major subject. Knowing the rules does not replace vigilance, but it helps boaters make more appropriate decisions, anticipate difficulties and behave responsibly around other waterway users.

Organising an effective revision programme

Regular study is generally more effective than trying to learn everything in the final few days before the examination. The Codes Rousseau study code and test resources can be used together at a pace suited to the candidate’s schedule.

A structured study method can follow these steps:

• Study the code by topic: read the explanations and identify the essential rules.

• Check understanding: answer the questions relating to the topic studied.

• Understand mistakes: return to the explanations instead of simply memorising the correct answer.

• Review difficult subjects: repeat questions that caused problems.

• Complete mock examinations: assess knowledge across several topics in one session.

• Review overall progress: identify weaker areas and allocate time for final revision.

This approach encourages steady progress and helps distinguish quick memorisation from genuine understanding. Practice tests are particularly useful when they guide further study rather than serving only to produce a score.

Conclusion

Nautic Way’s Inland Waterways Boating Licence category brings together four Codes Rousseau resources dedicated to preparing for the French inland-waters boating licence: the study code, the test book, the examination kit and the pack combining the code and test book.

The code explains the essential rules and concepts for navigating rivers, canals and lakes. Practice questions and mock examinations help candidates check their knowledge, while the kit and combined pack support different approaches to organising revision. By combining reading, regular exercises and careful analysis of mistakes, candidates can structure their preparation and better understand the rules that contribute to safe and responsible inland navigation.
