C-MAP MAX Local on SD / microSD Card

Introduction

The C-MAP MAX Local on SD or microSD card is a digital marine chart designed for boaters using a marine GPS, GPS chartplotter or navigation system compatible with C-MAP charting. It displays the available cartographic information for a defined geographical area directly on the navigation screen.

The C-MAP MAX Local range is particularly suitable for boaters looking for charting focused on a specific navigation area. The term “Local” refers to a more targeted geographical coverage than a regional or wider chart. It does not necessarily mean that the chart is limited to a single harbour or a few kilometres of coastline: the exact coverage depends on the specific C-MAP reference.

A C-MAP MAX Local can therefore be used for coastal navigation, day trips, cruising in a familiar area or route planning around a defined geographical sector.

What is a C-MAP MAX Local chart?

A C-MAP MAX Local is a digital marine chart designed to operate on equipment compatible with the C-MAP system.

It provides a digital representation of the covered area and may, depending on the reference, include different categories of nautical information:

• coastlines and islands;

• depths and soundings;

• bathymetric contours;

• channels and passages;

• ports and marinas;

• navigation aids;

• charted hazards and obstacles;

• special or regulated areas;

• information useful for route planning.

The exact content varies according to the C-MAP MAX Local reference and its geographical coverage. Not all MAX Local charts should therefore be considered identical.

The term “Local” mainly describes the geographical extent of the coverage, rather than a limitation of the navigation functions available on the equipment.

What is a C-MAP MAX Local chart used for?

A C-MAP MAX Local chart allows digital charting to be used directly on a compatible GPS or chartplotter.

It can be used to:

• plan coastal navigation;

• monitor the vessel's position;

• identify charted depths;

• plan a route;

• create waypoints;

• navigate around islands;

• approach a port or marina;

• cross a bay or channel;

• identify certain charted hazards.

It is particularly suitable for boaters who regularly navigate within a defined geographical area and do not necessarily require very wide geographical coverage.

C-MAP MAX Local on SD or microSD card

C-MAP MAX Local charts are supplied on SD or microSD cards, depending on the reference.

The physical card contains the digital chart data intended for use with compatible equipment. However, the physical format alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Before using a C-MAP MAX Local chart, the following should be checked:

• the GPS or chartplotter manufacturer;

• the exact equipment model;

• C-MAP compatibility;

• the supported SD or microSD format;

• the equipment's software version;

• the exact chart reference;

• the geographical area covered.

A device equipped with a microSD card slot is therefore not automatically compatible with every C-MAP chart supplied on microSD.

Charting designed for coastal navigation

Coastal navigation is one of the main uses of a C-MAP MAX Local chart.

A boater who regularly sails in a specific area can use the charting to plan routes and monitor progress.

For example, a boat based in a coastal region can use a MAX Local chart to navigate:

• between its home port and nearby ports;

• around an archipelago;

• in a bay;

• along a coastline;

• between several anchorages;

• through an area with several channels.

Digital charting makes it possible to display the vessel's position together with the main cartographic information available for the area.

Depths, soundings and bathymetry

Depending on the reference, a C-MAP MAX Local chart can display depths, soundings and bathymetric information.

These data help the navigator understand the configuration of the seabed and identify areas where depth changes.

They can be particularly useful when the navigator needs to take the vessel's draft into account.

For example, when approaching a shallow bay, displaying depths can help identify areas where the water becomes shallower and prepare an appropriate route.

It is important, however, to distinguish charted depth from the depth measured in real time by the depth sounder.

The chart provides cartographic data; the depth sounder measures the depth beneath the vessel during navigation.

Example: planning a coastal trip

Consider a boater with a motorboat who regularly navigates along a particular coastline.

Before departure, the navigator can use the C-MAP MAX Local chart to:

1. identify the departure port;

2. locate ports or marinas along the route;

3. examine available depths;

4. identify charted passages and channels;

5. create several waypoints;

6. plan a route;

7. check the intended progress.

Once underway, the chartplotter displays the vessel's position and allows the navigator to follow the planned route.

The digital chart therefore becomes both a route-planning tool and a navigation-monitoring tool.

C-MAP MAX Local for navigating around islands

Island areas are particularly well suited to the use of digital charting.

When a route passes between several islands, the navigator needs to identify passages, shallow areas, charted hazards and any navigable channels.

A C-MAP MAX Local chart covering the relevant area can make this planning easier.

It allows the navigator to compare different possible routes before departure and adapt the itinerary to the characteristics of the vessel.

C-MAP MAX Local and route planning

A digital marine chart is not only used to display the vessel's position.

It can also be used to plan a route consisting of several points.

Depending on the GPS or chartplotter's capabilities, the navigator may be able to:

• create waypoints;

• connect several waypoints to form a route;

• modify an itinerary;

• follow a programmed route;

• monitor progress;

• adapt the route according to the conditions encountered.

Planning must nevertheless take other parameters into account, including weather, wind, currents, tides, vessel draft, local regulations and up-to-date nautical information.

What geographical area does a C-MAP MAX Local chart cover?

The term Local should be understood as an indication of targeted geographical coverage.

A C-MAP MAX Local chart may cover a specific coastal area, but the exact extent depends on the reference.

It should therefore not be assumed that a “Local” chart automatically covers:

• an entire sea;

• an entire country;

• every coastline in a region;

• neighbouring areas.

Two nearby navigation areas may also belong to different C-MAP chart references.

Checking the exact geographical coverage is therefore an essential step when selecting a chart.

C-MAP MAX Local and regional navigation

Local charting can be particularly useful for boaters who mainly navigate within a familiar area.

For example, a boat based in a particular harbour may regularly undertake trips within a defined cruising range. A local chart covering that area may meet the boat's navigation needs without requiring much wider geographical coverage.

It can be suitable for:

• coastal cruising;

• day trips;

• weekend boating;

• local cruises;

• navigation around islands;

• trips between nearby ports;

• coastal fishing.

C-MAP MAX Local for motorboats and sailing yachts

Digital charting can be used by both motorboats and sailing yachts, subject to compatibility with the navigation equipment.

For a motorboat, it can make it easier to plan a direct route between several points.

For a sailing yacht, it can be used to plan a route while taking depths, passages, charted hazards and the characteristics of the area into account.

In both cases, the chart remains a navigation aid and must be interpreted together with other available information.

A digital chart does not replace the depth sounder

C-MAP MAX Local may display charted depths, but these data do not necessarily correspond to the instantaneous depth beneath the vessel.

The onboard depth sounder provides a different measurement, directly related to the conditions encountered at the time.

Differences may result from:

• tidal variations;

• sea level;

• the vessel's exact position;

• survey accuracy;

• changes in the seabed;

• the vertical reference datum used.

It is therefore essential to maintain an appropriate safety margin according to the vessel's draft and the navigation conditions.

How to choose a C-MAP MAX Local chart

Before selecting a C-MAP MAX Local chart, several factors should be checked:

• the exact navigation area;

• the C-MAP reference;

• the geographical coverage;

• the GPS or chartplotter model;

• C-MAP compatibility;

• the SD or microSD format;

• the equipment's software version;

• the available cartographic and bathymetric data.

These checks help prevent the selection of a chart whose coverage or compatibility does not match the actual navigation requirements.

An aid to navigation

A C-MAP MAX Local chart is a navigation aid. It should not be considered the only source of information used on board.

The navigator should also take into account:

• official charts and nautical information where required;

• Notices to Mariners;

• tide information;

• currents;

• weather;

• local restrictions;

• observed buoyage;

• the depth sounder;

• actual conditions encountered.

Electronic charting is particularly effective when integrated into an overall navigation preparation and monitoring process.

Conclusion

The C-MAP MAX Local on SD / microSD card is a digital marine chart designed for C-MAP-compatible GPS units and chartplotters. Its main characteristic is its targeted geographical coverage, making it suitable for boaters who regularly navigate within a defined area.

It can be used for coastal navigation, day trips, local cruising, navigation around islands, route planning and GPS route monitoring.

Depending on the reference, the data may include coastlines, depths, soundings, bathymetric contours, ports, marinas, channels, navigation aids and charted hazards.

The term “Local” does not define a standardized area: each C-MAP reference has its own coverage. It is therefore essential to check the exact geographical area and compatibility with the GPS or chartplotter before use.

Finally, like any electronic chart, C-MAP MAX Local is a navigation aid. Charted data should be combined with up-to-date nautical information, weather conditions, tides, depth sounder readings and visual observation on board.
