Astronomical calculator
An astronomical navigation calculator simplifies the calculations required for sextant sights and determining a vessel’s position at sea. Designed for celestial navigation, it supports offshore sailors, ocean voyagers and students undertaking nautical training. Depending on the model and software, it can calculate a line of position, process observations of the Sun or stars, and simplify operations traditionally performed using nautical ephemerides and sight-reduction tables. A calculator programmed for celestial navigation may also include star-finding or star-identification functions and the transfer of lines of position. Used with a sextant and an accurate watch or marine chronometer, it helps navigators learn and practise astronomical fixes. Solutions such as the Casio GRAPH 35 with Navastro or Admiralty NavPac address different calculation needs in offshore navigation.
