Parallel ruler
A parallel rule is a traditional navigation plotting instrument used on marine charts to transfer directions, plot a course and determine a heading from a reference line. Its linked or sliding design allows a line to be moved parallel to itself while maintaining its orientation. It is particularly useful for planning a maritime route, plotting bearings and practising dead reckoning exercises. Used with dividers, a marine chart and appropriate nautical publications, a parallel rule supports recreational sailors, skippers, offshore navigators and maritime students. It helps plot courses and interpret directions on paper charts when preparing a passage or coastal navigation. This traditional chart table instrument complements modern navigation equipment and supports a systematic approach to passage planning.
