    Guide to lights and fog signals

    This series of books provides detailed information on all lighthouses, lighted floating marks (over 8m in height), fog signals and other lights of importance to navigation.

    Each publication gives also the characteristics of lights and fog signals, as well as the equivalent light descriptions in foreign languages. Tables can be used to calculate geographical and luminous ranges of lights. Details for all lights shown include international number, location and/or name, geographic coordinates, characteristics and intensity, elevation in meters, range in sea miles and description of structure.

    As the needs of Shom's civil and military customers evolve and ENCs (electronic navigational charts) become more widespread, Shom has decided to rationalize its portfolio of charts in foreign waters by the end of the year. In coherence, the coverage of nautical works will also be rationalized.

    Second half of 2021, as part of the rationalization of its portfolio of charts in foreign waters, in line with the coverage of nautical works, Shom has decided to reduce the coverage of the Books of Fires to that of nautical charts which thus pass from 4 volumes (LA, LB, LC, LD) to 2 volumes L1 (France Métropole) and L2 (Overseas and foreign areas). This provision comes into force on September 8, 2021.

    Radio signal structure

    As part of the November 2021 streamlining, it was decided to reduce the coverage of 6 of the 10 existing radio signal structures to that of nautical charts. This concerns works 921 and 922 (maritime radio stations), 931 and 932 (port radiocommunications), 961 and 962 (maritime safety information). After reduction of the coverage, the works 921 and 922 are merged into a single work the "92", the 930 (non-port reporting systems) retains its current coverage (Western Europe, Channel, Western Mediterranean and overseas) is merged with 931 and 932 into a single structure, "93", structures 961 and 962 are also merged into a single structure, "96". Book 91 (maritime radionavigation) retains worldwide coverage for the part devoted to satellite positioning systems and terrestrial infrastructure radionavigation systems, but the chapters describing beacons (Racon, Ramarks, AIS) are also reduced to map coverage area. Book 924 (GMDSS) retains worldwide coverage. Book 99, which is a compilation of other radiosignal books, is deleted.
