Nautical Chart for the Arctic Ocean

The Arctic Ocean is one of the northernmost and most distinctive maritime regions in the world. It extends around the North Pole and connects with the Atlantic Ocean through the Norwegian Sea and Greenland Sea, and with the Pacific Ocean through the Bering Strait. A nautical chart for the Arctic Ocean represents these vast polar waters and helps prepare for navigation in conditions that are very different from those encountered in temperate regions.

Arctic nautical chart coverage includes the Barents Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea, Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea. It also covers Greenland, the Svalbard archipelago, the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Alaska and the maritime routes passing through the Bering Strait.

An Arctic nautical chart can be used to prepare an offshore passage, a polar expedition, a delivery voyage, professional navigation or approaches to ports and anchorages located in northern regions.

Nautical Charting of the Arctic Ocean

Arctic nautical charts are available at different scales. This concept is particularly important in such a vast region.

A small-scale chart provides an overall view of the Arctic Ocean and is useful for planning long-distance routes. For example, it may show a large part of a route between the Kara Sea and the Bering Strait.

Conversely, a large-scale nautical chart provides greater detail when navigating close to a coastline, archipelago, port, channel or anchorage.

Arctic nautical charts may show:

• coastlines and islands;

• depths and soundings;

• depth contours;

• shoals and isolated dangers;

• channels and navigable passages;

• ports and approaches;

• anchorages;

• buoys and aids to navigation where available;

• restricted and regulated areas;

• glaciers and coastal features;

• geographical references required for navigation.

The level of detail always depends on the scale, geographical area and hydrographic data available.

The Main Seas of the Arctic Ocean

The Arctic Ocean consists of several basins and marginal seas. An Arctic nautical chart can therefore correspond to very different geographical areas depending on its coverage.

The Barents Sea lies between Norway, Russia and the Svalbard archipelago. It is one of the more accessible maritime areas of the European Arctic.

The Kara Sea, located east of Novaya Zemlya, is an important section of the Northern Sea Route.

Further east lie the Laptev Sea, the East Siberian Sea and the Chukchi Sea.

The Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska and Canada, is one of the major maritime regions of the North American Arctic.

The Bering Strait is a key passage between the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. NOAA describes it as the gateway between the Bering Sea and the Chukchi Sea.

This succession of seas explains why preparing an Arctic voyage generally requires several charts covering the different stages of the route.

The Northeast Passage and Arctic Shipping Routes

The Northeast Passage, often referred to as the Northern Sea Route in its Russian sector, connects European and Asian regions by passing north of Russia.

Cartographic preparation may therefore require coverage from the Barents Sea and Kara Sea to the Bering Strait, via the Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea and Chukchi Sea.

NGA charts include a reference covering the area between the Kara Sea and the Bering Strait. NGA chart 00800 is an ocean planning chart at a scale of 1:4,205,000 covering a very large part of the Arctic.

For actual navigation, however, a general chart does not replace the larger-scale charts required for coastal approaches and confined passages.

The Northwest Passage

In the western Arctic, the Northwest Passage crosses the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through waters north of Canada.

This region includes in particular:

• Baffin Bay;

• Lancaster Sound;

• Barrow Strait;

• Franklin Strait;

• Amundsen Gulf;

• Beaufort Sea;

• the numerous islands of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) maintains a dedicated catalogue of nautical charts for the Canadian Arctic. Its Arctic catalogue lists nautical charts and publications covering this vast region.

Charting the Northwest Passage requires particular attention to channels, available depths, ice conditions and the extent of hydrographic surveys.

Greenland, Svalbard and Northern Regions

Nautical charts of the Arctic Ocean also cover several major island and coastal territories.

Greenland is one of the largest land masses in the Arctic region. Charts may cover its coastline, fjords, archipelagos and approaches to ports such as Nuuk, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Uummannaq and Qaanaaq.

Svalbard, including Spitsbergen and Longyearbyen, is another important area for Arctic navigation.

To the east, the northern coast of Russia includes ports and maritime areas such as Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Dikson, Sabetta, Tiksi and Pevek.

On the American side, Arctic charts cover Alaska and areas including Prudhoe Bay, Nome and Utqiaġvik.

These ports and locations may serve as departure points, stopovers or logistical support locations depending on the route.

Ports and Approaches in the Arctic

Charting Arctic ports generally requires larger scales than those used for ocean crossings.

Important ports and maritime locations in the region include:

• Tromsø, Norway;

• Hammerfest, Norway;

• Kirkenes, Norway;

• Longyearbyen, Svalbard;

• Murmansk, Russia;

• Arkhangelsk, Russia;

• Sabetta, on the Yamal Peninsula;

• Tiksi, on the Laptev Sea;

• Pevek, in Russia's Far East;

• Nome, Alaska;

• Prudhoe Bay, Alaska;

• Nuuk, Greenland;

• Ilulissat, Greenland;

• Churchill, Canada;

• Iqaluit, Canada;

• Resolute, Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

A general Arctic chart does not provide the same level of detail as a port approach chart. The appropriate scale must therefore always correspond to the stage of navigation.

Major Arctic Nautical Chart Publishers

Several international hydrographic organisations and chart publishers produce or provide cartographic data covering the Arctic.

Admiralty / UKHO is one of the world's major sources of international nautical charting. Its catalogue includes charts covering northern Norway, the Barents Sea and the Kara Sea. The Admiralty catalogue can be searched by area, scale or route and is regularly updated.

NGA – National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency also provides charts covering Arctic regions. Its series includes general charts covering areas between Greenland, the Kara Sea and the Bering Strait.

NOAA provides nautical charting and marine information for US waters, including Alaska. The organisation highlights the importance of improving hydrographic coverage in the Arctic, where some areas still rely on older survey data.

The Canadian Hydrographic Service provides charting for Canadian waters, with dedicated coverage of the Arctic.

The Shom – Service hydrographique et océanographique de la Marine also provides digital data and charts covering certain Arctic areas, including raster GeoTIFF formats.

Paper and Digital Arctic Nautical Charts

An Arctic nautical chart may be available in different formats depending on the publisher and intended use.

A paper chart is particularly useful for working with a large geographical representation, planning a route and maintaining an independent navigation resource that does not rely on electronic equipment.

A digital raster chart is a georeferenced representation of an existing chart. It retains the graphical organisation and information of the source chart.

Electronic vector charts, where available for the relevant area, consist of digital geographical data that can be used by compatible electronic navigation systems.

In all cases, the format should not obscure the fundamental considerations: hydrographic source, scale, geographical coverage, edition and updating status.

Navigation in Arctic Waters and Sea Ice

The presence of ice is one of the main characteristics of Arctic navigation.

Ice conditions change according to the season, weather, currents and numerous oceanographic factors. A nautical chart provides geographical and hydrographic information, but it is not, by itself, a real-time source of information about current ice conditions.

Navigation in the Arctic therefore requires chart information to be combined with weather information, ice information, navigational warnings and other available nautical data.

This is particularly important in the Beaufort Sea, Chukchi Sea, East Siberian Sea, Laptev Sea and Kara Sea.

How to Choose a Nautical Chart for the Arctic Ocean

The choice of an Arctic nautical chart primarily depends on the intended route and the level of detail required.

It is important to check:

• the geographical area covered;

• the chart scale;

• the type of navigation planned;

• the ports and approaches involved;

• the availability of detailed hydrographic data;

• paper or digital format;

• the original publisher or hydrographic authority;

• the edition and applicable corrections;

• any available information concerning sea ice;

• compatibility with the navigation system being used.

A general Arctic Ocean chart is suitable for planning a very long-distance ocean route. A coastal or approach chart is required for navigation close to coastlines, archipelagos and ports.

Charting for Long-Distance Polar Voyages

A nautical chart of the Arctic Ocean is an essential tool for understanding the maritime geography of the North Pole and preparing navigation in this unique region.

From the Barents Sea to the Bering Strait, from Greenland to Alaska, distances are considerable and navigation conditions can change rapidly. Nautical charts help structure route planning by identifying coastlines, depths, passages, hazards, ports and the various maritime regions along the route.

Arctic charting relies on the complementary work of several organisations and chart series, including Admiralty/UKHO, NGA, NOAA, the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Shom and other national hydrographic authorities.

Conclusion

A nautical chart for the Arctic Ocean should be selected according to the navigation area, scale and level of accuracy required. The region encompasses a vast collection of maritime areas including the Barents Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea, Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea, as well as Greenland, Svalbard, Alaska and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

For polar voyage planning, it is essential to distinguish an ocean planning chart from a coastal or approach chart. Charts must also be used together with current nautical, meteorological and ice information corresponding to actual navigation conditions.

Arctic charting is therefore both a geographical representation and a technical navigation resource for planning routes through one of the most complex and remote maritime regions in the world.
