NGA Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico Nautical Chart

The area covered by the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico forms one of the world's largest and most complex navigation regions, encompassing thousands of islands, strategic passages such as the Panama Canal, and challenging coral shoal areas. Nautic Way Maritime Bookshop offers a specialised selection of documentation produced by the NGA (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency), providing essential resources for modern navigation in this region. These technical resources cater to a wide range of navigation needs, from international offshore navigation to precise manoeuvres in coastal waters. Choosing the right NGA chart for your voyage is essential for safe and accurate navigation for any crew venturing beyond European waters.

What is this nautical chart used for?

NGA nautical charts for the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico are more than navigation products; they are strategic decision-making tools designed to support effective navigation.

• Route and manoeuvre planning: They provide precise support for planning routes through complex passages, such as the Mona Passage and the approaches to Port-au-Prince.

• Comprehensive information: They provide a solid basis for voyage preparation by combining geospatial data with essential maritime safety information.

• Strategic overview: Unlike digital systems, which can often segment the overall view, a paper chart provides a robust perspective of the maritime environment, making it particularly useful for developing a clear route strategy.

• Essential backup: They remain indispensable in the event of electronic system failure, GPS failure or battery problems, remaining readable and immediately available when needed.

Which type of navigator is this chart recommended for?

Nautic Way offers a catalogue of 96 NGA products for this region, serving a wide range of maritime users.

• Long-distance leisure sailors: Particularly crews undertaking round-the-world voyages or ocean passages entering the Caribbean from the east.

• Coastal and offshore fishermen: They facilitate the identification of fishing areas and the planning of fishing operations through detailed representations of seabed characteristics and maritime boundaries.

• Shipowners and professional vessels: International fleets use NGA chart series to support their charting documentation requirements and anticipate sensitive areas.

• Maritime schools and training centres: They provide a comprehensive teaching resource through the use of internationally standardised chart symbols.

Reading and understanding the chart

The value of NGA charts lies in their technical accuracy and professional format designed for demanding onboard use.

• Professional large-format presentation: Printed on high-quality paper, they are ideally suited to chart tables and use at sea during ocean passages.

• Various scales: The Nautic Way catalogue allows mariners to select charts according to their needs: coastal coverage (36 products), nearshore coverage (26 products), offshore coverage (7 products) or oceanic coverage.

• Standardised IHO (INT Chart) symbols: Chart codes, colours and symbols comply with international conventions, providing familiar chart symbology for navigators trained in Europe.

• Detailed hydrographic data: Each chart includes soundings, expressed in metres or fathoms, seabed characteristics, channels, isolated dangers and regulatory boundaries such as Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs).

Reliability, updates and safety

Safety at sea depends on the reliability and continuous updating of the navigation documentation used.

• Recent editions: Charts supplied by Nautic Way are systematically from the latest available edition, ensuring that the documentation is current and ready for use upon receipt.

• Best practice: It is recommended to combine the use of paper charts, for their overall view and safety value, with electronic navigation systems for real-time positioning and navigation data.

FAQ

Which NGA nautical chart should I choose for navigation in this region?
The choice depends on your itinerary. For entering the Caribbean from the east, NGA chart 25001 is a key reference. For transit towards the Pacific, Panama Canal charts, such as NGA 21602, are essential.

Is this chart sufficient on its own for safe navigation?
Although comprehensive, it is often an essential complement to local national charts and should be used as part of a complete navigation strategy that includes sailing directions and light lists.

How often should an NGA chart be replaced?
It is essential to use the latest available edition to ensure the accuracy of safety information. Nautic Way supplies the most up-to-date versions available.

Can NGA charts be used with GPS?
Yes. NGA paper charts use standardised IHO symbols, allowing accurate manual position plotting and providing a reliable reference for checking electronic navigation data.

What is the difference between an NGA chart and a SHOM chart for the Caribbean?
SHOM primarily focuses on French national areas of interest, whereas the NGA provides extensive worldwide coverage, including international waters, remote archipelagos and strategic straits, using standardised professional chart symbology.
