C-MAP Discover on SD / microSD Card

Introduction: What is a C-MAP Discover Digital Marine Chart?

The C-MAP Discover on SD / microSD card is a digital marine chart designed for boaters using a GPS chartplotter, navigation system or multifunction display compatible with C-MAP charts.

The C-MAP Discover range is designed to provide a detailed digital representation of the maritime areas covered by each chart reference. It allows the navigator to access electronic chart information useful for navigation planning and monitoring, including coastlines, depths, soundings, bathymetric contours, ports, marinas, channels, navigation aids and other charted features depending on the area concerned.

Depending on the reference, C-MAP Discover is available on SD or microSD card and can meet a variety of navigation requirements, including coastal navigation, recreational boating, fishing and cruising.

Choosing a C-MAP Discover marine chart on SD or microSD should nevertheless take into account the geographical area required and, above all, compatibility with the GPS or chartplotter being used.

What is C-MAP Discover?

C-MAP Discover is a range of electronic marine charts designed for C-MAP-compatible equipment.

Digital charting makes it possible to display a wide range of useful navigation information on the screen of a GPS chartplotter. Depending on the area and the selected chart reference, the data may include:

• coastlines;

• depths;

• bathymetric soundings;

• depth contours;

• ports and harbour facilities;

• marinas;

• channels;

• navigation aids;

• charted obstacles and hazards;

• certain regulated areas;

• various features useful for route planning.

One of the main advantages of electronic charting is its integration with the navigation system. The navigator can display the chart and the boat's GPS position on the same screen and plan a route using the available chart data.

It is important, however, to distinguish the C-MAP Discover range from each individual geographical reference. Not all Discover charts cover the same area.

A Digital Chart for GPS Chartplotters

A C-MAP Discover chart on SD is designed to be read by compatible electronic equipment.

Once the card has been inserted into the appropriate slot of the GPS chartplotter, the digital chart can be displayed on the navigation screen.

Depending on the functions available on the equipment, the navigator may be able to:

• display the GPS position;

• monitor the vessel's progress;

• plan a route;

• create waypoints;

• select a destination;

• modify a route;

• view depth information;

• identify ports and marinas;

• consult available chart information;

• adjust the display scale.

C-MAP Discover therefore becomes an electronic navigation resource that can be used to plan a passage and monitor the vessel's progress.

C-MAP Discover on SD or microSD

C-MAP Discover digital charts may be supplied on different physical media depending on the reference, including SD and microSD cards.

The microSD format has the advantage of being particularly compact. It is used by certain models of GPS chartplotters and electronic navigation systems.

Some microSD cards may also be used with an SD adapter when the equipment has a compatible SD card slot.

However, it is essential not to confuse the physical format with electronic compatibility.

Before choosing a C-MAP Discover SD card for a GPS, it is recommended to check:

• the equipment manufacturer;

• the exact GPS or chartplotter model;

• the format accepted by the card slot;

• the equipment's C-MAP compatibility;

• the device's software version;

• the exact chart reference;

• the geographical area covered.

A device equipped with an SD or microSD card slot is therefore not necessarily compatible with all C-MAP digital charts.

What Is a C-MAP Discover Chart Used For?

The Discover range can meet a variety of electronic navigation requirements.

Coastal Navigation

For coastal navigation, the chart makes it possible to visualize the general configuration of the coastline and the available chart data for the area covered.

The navigator can use the system to plan a route between several ports, monitor progress and consult the chart information displayed by the navigation system.

Recreational Boating and Cruising

A C-MAP Discover chart for boats can be used for day trips as well as longer coastal cruises.

For example, a sailing yacht or motorboat can leave its home port, travel to another marina, sail around an island or undertake a coastal cruise.

The ability to display a relatively broad geographical area makes it possible to plan different routes using the same chart support, depending on the coverage of the selected reference.

Fishing

Depth and bathymetric information can also be useful for fishing activities.

The representation of soundings and depth variations can help provide a better understanding of the seabed configuration in charted areas.

These data should nevertheless be regarded as chart information. They are not a real-time measurement of the depth beneath the vessel.

Depths, Soundings and Bathymetry

Depths and bathymetric data are essential elements of electronic marine charting for many navigation applications.

Depending on the area covered by the C-MAP Discover reference, the chart may display different depths, soundings and bathymetric contours.

This information can be used to:

• plan a coastal route;

• identify shallower areas;

• study a bay;

• prepare an approach;

• analyse the general seabed configuration;

• plan a fishing trip;

• visualize changes in depth.

Electronic charting should nevertheless not be considered a real-time measurement system.

Actual available depth may vary depending on tides, water levels, weather conditions, changes in the seabed and the accuracy of the available hydrographic data.

Example of Using C-MAP Discover

Consider a boat based on a coastline and regularly used for recreational sailing.

Before departure, the navigator can display the area covered by their C-MAP Discover chart on the GPS.

They can then:

1. identify the departure port;

2. display the GPS position;

3. select a destination port;

4. plan a route;

5. examine the depths along the route;

6. identify charted obstacles or hazards;

7. monitor progress during the voyage;

8. modify the route if necessary.

If the navigator wishes to explore a new area, they can also check in advance that it falls within the geographical coverage of their C-MAP Discover reference.

C-MAP Discover and Geographical Coverage

The choice of a digital marine chart should not be based solely on the name of the range.

A C-MAP Discover chart may cover a specific geographical area, but the exact limits depend on the individual chart reference.

It is therefore important to determine precisely:

• the country or countries concerned;

• the coastline to be navigated;

• any islands to be visited;

• departure and destination ports;

• usual sailing areas;

• any planned extensions to the cruising area.

A navigator who remains close to a home port may have different requirements from a boater planning a coastal cruise covering several hundred nautical miles.

C-MAP Discover for Recreational Boating

C-MAP Discover marine charting for recreational boating can be suitable for different types of boaters.

It may be used by:

• sailing boat owners;

• motorboat users;

• anglers;

• coastal cruisers;

• navigators using a compatible GPS chartplotter;

• boaters who regularly plan electronic routes.

For regular navigation, one of the main advantages is having the chart directly integrated into the boat's electronic navigation system.

How to Choose a C-MAP Discover Chart

To choose a C-MAP Discover marine chart compatible with your GPS, it is advisable to follow several steps.

Define the Navigation Area

Start by determining precisely where you will be sailing: coastline, sea, archipelago, bay or maritime region.

Check the Coverage

Next, check the exact geographical coverage of the Discover reference being considered.

Identify the Equipment

Check the manufacturer and exact model of the GPS, chartplotter or multifunction display.

Check the Physical Format

Determine whether your equipment uses an SD or microSD card.

Check Compatibility

Finally, verify that the equipment supports C-MAP technology and the specific chart reference selected.

This approach helps avoid a common mistake: choosing a chart based solely on its geographical area without checking compatibility with the navigation equipment.

Conclusion

The C-MAP Discover on SD / microSD card is a digital marine charting solution designed for GPS chartplotters and navigation systems compatible with C-MAP.

It provides navigation screens with chart information relating to the areas covered by the selected reference, including coastlines, depths, soundings, bathymetry, ports, marinas, channels, navigation aids and various other features useful for route planning.

To choose the right C-MAP Discover SD or microSD chart, three elements should be checked as a priority: the required geographical area, the C-MAP chart reference and the exact compatibility of the GPS or chartplotter.
