National Hydrographic Office of India Nautical Chart

The nautical charts published by the National Hydrographic Office of India (INHO) are the official reference for navigation in waters under Indian jurisdiction. This strategically important maritime domain includes the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.

With more than 7,500 kilometres of coastline and a position at the heart of major international shipping routes, India plays a key role in global maritime navigation. Choosing official INHO charting is essential for safety, accuracy and regulatory compliance for any navigator operating in these heavily trafficked waters.

Offered by the Nautic Way Maritime Bookshop, these charts are intended for professional mariners, experienced leisure sailors, shipping companies and international maritime operators.

What is this nautical chart used for?

The value of an official INHO nautical chart lies in its ability to provide comprehensive hydrographic information, turning the chart into an essential decision-making and navigation tool.

• Voyage planning and safety: Indian paper charts remain an important reference for voyage planning, maritime training and as an onboard back-up.

• Navigation in strategic areas: They help ensure safe navigation in the approaches to major ports such as Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam.

• Managing a complex environment: These charts are essential for navigating areas characterised by complex seasonal currents, shallow waters and extreme weather conditions such as monsoons and cyclones.

FAQ

Which nautical chart should I choose for navigation in Indian waters?

The choice depends on your intended navigation area, whether coastal, nearshore or offshore. You can use the interactive chart map on the Nautic Way website to identify the chart numbers best suited to your itinerary from the available catalogue.

Is this chart sufficient on its own for safe navigation?

Although comprehensive and official, an INHO chart is one essential component of a broader navigation strategy. It should be used together with other relevant nautical publications and navigation documents for comprehensive risk management.

How often should an INHO chart be replaced?

It is essential to use the most recent available edition. As Nautic Way prints charts to order with the latest available updates, it is recommended to obtain a current edition before each voyage in the area to ensure that the information remains accurate and up to date.

Can it be used with a GPS?

Yes. Official paper charts and electronic navigational charts (ENCs) are based on official hydrographic data, allowing the navigator to cross-check electronic positioning by manually plotting the vessel's position on the paper chart.

What is the difference between an INHO chart and a SHOM chart?

SHOM is the official hydrographic authority for French waters, while the INHO is the official hydrographic authority for Indian waters. Both produce charts in accordance with the international standards of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) for their respective areas of responsibility.
