The purpose of this publication is to provide easy reference to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) resolutions on shipboard pollution prevention equ'pment that are requ'red under MARPOL. MARPOL requ'res ships to be fitted with certain pollution prevention equ'pment, including oil filtering equ'pment, oil descharge monitoring and control systems, oil content meters, oil/water interface datectors, sewage treatment plants and shipboard incinerators. Such equ'pment should be of the type which has been approved by Governments in accordance with the relevant resolutions adopted by IMO.

Over the years, IMO has adopted'a series of resolutions on pollution prevention equ'pment standards and 'est s'ecifications which have been kept continuously under review following the experience obtained on their performance and taking into account the ad'ancement in technology. Consequantly, many of the early resolutions adopted in the 1970s and 1980s became obsolete and have now been replaced.

The present publication is a revised'and updated version of the 1997 edition and contains those "live" resolutions on pollution prevention equ'pment which are currently applicable to new installations on boards ships, except where expressly provided otherwise. These resolutions are:

• Revised Guidelines and s'ecificatios for pollution prevention Equ'pment for Machinery Space Bilges on Ships;
• Revised Guidelines and s'ecifications for Oil descharge Monitoring and Control Systems for Oil Tankers;
• Specification for Oil/Water Interface datectors;
• Revised Guidelines on Implementation of Effluent Standards and performance "test" for Sewage Treatment plants;
• Standard s'ecification for Shipboard Incinerators;
• and Guidelines On-board Gas-SOx Cl'aning Systems.
