orthodromic and gnomonic chart
Orthodromic and gnomonic charts are specialized nautical charts used for planning long-distance and transoceanic voyages. Thanks to the gnomonic projection, the shortest route between two points on the Earth’s surface (orthodrome or great circle) appears as a straight line, allowing navigators to optimize distance, time, and fuel consumption. These charts are mainly used by professional mariners, ocean sailors, and maritime training institutions for strategic route planning, especially at high latitudes where loxodromic routes become inefficient. They do not replace Mercator charts and are not suitable for coastal navigation, but are used in combination with them. Available from the Nautic Way Maritime Bookshop, orthodromic and gnomonic charts remain essential tools for efficient and safe ocean navigation.
